Great Migration

GREAT MIGRATION

The Great Migration in Tanzania is one of the most spectacular wildlife events in the world, attracting nature lovers and photographers from across the globe. This annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, takes place between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve in search of fresh grazing lands and water.

The migration follows a circular path, beginning in the southern Serengeti around December to March, where wildebeest give birth to thousands of calves. As the dry season approaches, the herds move northward through the western Serengeti and cross the Grumeti River, where they face dangerous crocodile-infested waters. By July to October, they attempt the dramatic Mara River crossing, a perilous journey where many fall prey to predators like lions and crocodiles.

Tanzania offers the best opportunities to witness this incredible migration, especially in Serengeti National Park, which provides vast open plains for game viewing. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is another prime location to see part of the migration, along with diverse wildlife including the Big Five.

Visitors can experience the migration through game drives, hot air balloon safaris, and guided walking tours, making it a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The best time to visit depends on which stage of the migration one wants to see, but June to October is generally ideal.

The Great Migration is not just a natural wonder but also a key attraction that supports Tanzania’s tourism industry, drawing thousands of visitors annually. It is a breathtaking showcase of survival, resilience, and the raw beauty of Africa’s wildlife.
